Access to quality healthcare is still a dream for millions in India. Especially in rural areas and urban slums. For many, awareness about health is even more critical than access to treatment.

Lack of knowledge often leads to preventable diseases. That’s why we believe that real change begins with community health awareness. At Nirmala Foundation, we are building a system of preventive care through education, early detection, and outreach.
In this article, we’ll explain how an NGO for health awareness works, what it does, and how you can be a part of it.
Why Health Awareness Matters in India
India has one of the largest populations in the world. But awareness about basic health is still very low in many parts.
Health Issues Due to Lack of Awareness:
- Many don’t know the importance of handwashing.
- Women lack information on menstrual hygiene.
- Children fall sick due to unsafe drinking water.
- Pregnant women miss checkups due to ignorance.
- TB, malaria, and anemia go undetected for years.
Facts that Show the Need for Awareness:
Issue | Impact on Population |
---|---|
Anemia in Women | Affects 57% of women aged 15–49 |
Malnutrition in Children | 1 in 3 children under 5 are underweight |
TB Cases in India (Annual) | Over 2.4 million reported cases |
Lack of Menstrual Education | 70% girls unaware before first period |
Maternal Mortality (MMR) | 103 deaths per 100,000 live births |
Without awareness, even free healthcare services go unused. Educating people creates real impact.
Our Approach to Health Awareness
We don’t believe in just handing out leaflets. Our work is grounded in direct community interaction, education, and behavior change.
What Health Awareness Means to Us
Health awareness is not just medical information. It is the knowledge that helps people make better health decisions.
We focus on:
- Disease prevention
- Sanitation and hygiene education
- Nutrition and wellness habits
- Women’s and adolescent health
- Understanding of symptoms and treatment options
Who We Help
We work with:
- Children (6–14 years)
- Adolescents, especially girls
- Pregnant and lactating women
- Daily wage earners and rural farmers
- Senior citizens in underserved areas
How We Conduct Health Awareness Campaigns
Every campaign we run is based on local needs. We speak in the local language. We work with community health workers.
Awareness Activities We Run:
- Street Plays (Nukkad Natak) on topics like hygiene and TB
- Health Talks in Schools to teach kids about nutrition and cleanliness
- Menstrual Hygiene Sessions with free sanitary pad distribution
- Village Meetings with mothers and elders
- Poster Campaigns in markets and public toilets
- Door-to-door education with pamphlets and verbal guidance
These tools help people understand — and remember — what they learn.
Health Services We Offer Alongside Awareness
We don’t just educate. We also offer basic services that bridge the gap between awareness and action.
Free Health Camps: Regular checkup camps are conducted in rural villages and urban slums. We bring basic diagnostics and medicines to those in need.
Mobile Medical Vans: Our mobile vans are equipped with doctors, nurses, and basic equipment. We take healthcare to the doorstep of remote communities.
Emergency Medical Aid: If someone is in need of surgery, medication, or hospitalization, we offer financial support and referrals to government hospitals.
Specialized Services
- Telehealth Consultations for remote areas
- Free sanitary pad distribution
- Nutrition kits for malnourished children
- Pregnancy monitoring and referral support
